Black & White Men Together - DC

20 Years of Making a Difference

Black and White Men Together of Washington, D.C. (BWMT-DC) is a multiracial organization dedicated to providing a supportive environment for gay men to work together to understand racial and cultural differences and celebrate diversity.

We join in committing to foster respect, honesty, communication and understanding among men of different races and cultural backgrounds.

Founded in September 1980, BWMT-DC is the local chapter of the National Association of Black and White Men Together (NABWMT).

The BWMT-DC Chapter is committed to:

Fighting racism, sexism, homophobia, and heterosexism
One of the ways BWMT fights oppression is through our Resisting Racism workshops, which we conduct for various groups within the gay community. In addition, a separate Resisting Racism manual provides methods on how to effectively combat racism in our everyday lives.

Unity
We are gay and bisexual men who share an interest in seeking out personal involvement of all kinds with men of other races. We share a commitment to living creatively and honestly in the face of racism, homophobia and heterosexiam, and other forces with seek to divide us.

Social Interaction
Within our chapter, members organize house parties, restaurant nights, shows, theater parties, discussions and rap sessions, to provide a variety of activities for our members.

Diversity
We are people of many different racial, cultural, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. We represent a variety of interests, political persuasions, religions, spiritualities and philosophies.

Visibility
Our chapter regularly paarticipates in community-wide events, such as Capaital Pride and AIDS Walk Washington.

Our Chapter Goals Are:

  • To provide opportunities for socialization between men of diverse races and cultures in an atmosphere conducive to forming long-lasting friendships, and to support ongoing inter-racial couple relationships.
  • To encourage examination of our personal feelings regarding race relations and to provide an educational forum to discuss race, sexuality, inter-racial relationships, prejudice and other emotionally charged subjects in a caring and supportive atmosphere.
  • To engage actively in the struggle against discrimination, especially in the gay community.
  • We encourage singles and inter-racial couples to join us in our many activities and be willing, able and open to new possibilities of growth.

BWMT-DC is a safe place and opportunity to...

  • Receive support and affirmation for multi-racial relationships
  • Develop and define multicultural relationships
  • Discuss and learn about racism, homophobia, classism, sexism, and their impact on our lives
  • Learn more about your own culture and history
  • Affirm your sexuality
  • Discover and become part of a "family" and community that extends over 30 affiliated chapters in the Americas

Join and involve yourself in the local chapter and to participate in the activities of the National Association of Black and White Men Together as a member at-large.
